Yoga Asanas, like any physical practice brings the mind into the body. It forces a connection that is often forgotten during routine day to day tasks of life and work. In conjunction with attention to breath and meditation a regular practice is the perfect antidote to daily stress. Asana practice and bodywork go hand in hand when trying to heal the body and work through personal restrictions, within the body and mind. I have found these two healing practices to be very complementary. As I become familiar with a person's body, I am able to suggest specific asanas that will help progress the unwinding and opening of their particular areas of restriction. Both practices build personal awareness of the body and the specific patterns that we have each developed over time. Private sessions offer clients the time and space needed to focus on what is important to their mind and bodies. Each session is tailored to the specific needs of the client and offers an environment with more freedom to have fun, be yourself, challenge, or be gentle with yourself and have the opportunity for open and honest discussion of mind and body.
I am pleased to offer private yoga sessions and yoga therapy sessions in my office in Arcata, CA.
My Background I have practiced yoga since 1998. My first experience with yoga was through one of those old 70's yoga books that my mom had. I never considered myself to be super flexible and was amazed at how my flexibility increased within two weeks into the practice. Since that time I have continued with my own personal practice at home and in various studios.
After practicing bodywork for several years, I realized I was constantly giving clients recommendations on stretches they could do at home to help with their specific areas of tension. In 2011 I traveled to India to deepen my understanding of the practice and complete my yoga teacher training. My experience in India was invaluable in my understanding of the culture and its spiritual connection to natural healing. While in India I completed a 200 hr yoga teacher training in Traditional Tantra Yoga at Shri Kali Ashram in Goa, India.
The yoga series at Shri Kali Ashram is a hatha based series that focuses on pranic flow and metaphysical concepts. It is not a randomly created modern sequence for a physical achievement or to go with a playlist of music. Practice is done with no background music and voice instruction is kept to a minimum. This creates space for a meditative practice that allows one to go deeper within and cultivate self awareness. Through this series, asanas are learned very efficiently and effortlessly, each pose building on the next. A real appreciation for the body is learned and 'Body Intelligence' is cultured. Sessions are deeply relaxing yet challenging. Shri Kali Ashram teaches that Yoga is a science, not a sport or competition. Competition means that one is always comparing and contrasting to external measures. Yoga instills integration, enrichment and incomparable inner strength. With these qualities, yogis master life. Mastery gives fulfillment and fulfillment stops one from dependence on the external.
Tantra is a science to understand and accept your real self. It dissolves inhibiting patterns and fears through knowledge (vidya) of self thus allowing one to attain total freedom (moksa) from the egoic self and imposed Karma.
"Many see Tantra as offering the only way to free us from the limitations of narcissism and isolation that besiege urban existence. There are several reasons for this. One is that however we attempt to harmonize ourselves, there is always the problem of harmonizing from a relative, ‘I-centered’ perspective. This is the nature of an uncultured identity.
A spiritual identity frees our minds from identifying with a little self. This frees us from the little mind and enables us to express our Divine self. This identifying with the little self is known as the ego. With the vanishing of the little self, life itself offers abundance. There is an old saying which highlights this, “A carpenter sees the species of wood while a child sees a wooden toy.” If we drop our tie-ups with our egohood we can see as a spiritualist, outside the limitations of the subjective self. This is the goal of Tantra.
Shaivism is a monistic (advaita) science that teaches integration and oneness with the auspicious Divine known as Shiva. This concept of wholesomeness is reflected in all our teachings. Tantra is not an academic philosophy, but a life practice. Since you can't separate the mind from the body, before you can learn to meditate, one must first achieve harmony within one's body. Tantrics see the body as an expression of the soul, not just a physical shell. Thus we offer a unique traditional system of āsanas, prāṇāyāma and bandhas to train the body, mind and subtle energy system (nāḍis). Through our āsanas, students not only build strength and flexibility, but also energy, grace, fluidity and inner harmony. Our unique teaching style enables our students to master their āsanasand meditation in a short time. In Tantra Yoga, āsanas take you to deeper meditation. We emphasize on meditation (Dhāraṇā / Dhyāna / Bhāvanā / Samādhi) to enable students to attain oneness with the Divine self." (from Shri Kali Ashram website)
